About the Joint Worcestershire Chess League

Published 20 September 2021

The Joint Worcestershire League was formed in response to the upheavals caused by the Covid-19 epidemic at a special joint meeting of members of the Worcestershire Chess Association and the Worcester & District League. It has two divisions.

Membership of the League is open to clubs affiliated to Worcestershire Chess Association or Worcester & District Chess League. The officials of the temporary joint league are Paul Sharratt (General secretary, grading officer, safeguarding lead). Panel for resolving disputes: Secretary W&DCL, Andrew Farthing; President WCA, Ray Collett; Brian Turner and Stephen Woodhouse.

League matches are played during the chess season, September 2021 to May 2022. Division 1 matches are played over five boards and Division 2 matches over four. All games in Divisions 1 and 2 are submitted for ECF standardplay rating. The joint EGM approved incremental time controls 50 min for all moves with an increment of 20 sec for each move from move 1, but if digital clocks are not available, all moves to be completed within 70 minutes. Clubs, teams and players are expected to observe anti-Covid precautions and familiarise themselves with advice from Worcestershire CA and the Government to protect the health of members of the chess community.

Club Secretaries should notify the Joint League’s Secretary, Paul Sharratt, of their club's intentions to compete. As a temporary measure no league affiliation or team entry fee will be levied for the 2021-2 season, but Clubs are responsible for any pay-to-play fees - currently £18 - for players who are not ECF members.
