A good season for Worcestershire

Worcestershire first team shared the Midlands title with Lincolnshire and all teams progressed to the national ECF stages. The first team were unhorsed by Suffolk in the quarter-finals. The under-140 team, hoping to repeat its triumph was successful in the quarter final, and just failed in the semi-final when the tie-break for the draw against Lancashire favoured the opposition. The Under-120 team unexpectedly progressed, but any dreams were cut short by Middlesex in the quarter final. The team captains were: First team, John Wrench; under-140 team Paul Sharratt; and Richard Collett under 120 team.

First team shares Midlands County Team Championship with Lincolnshire

12 Sep. Five teams competed: Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire. Three teams were invited to accept nominated from this tournament to compete in the national stages.

8 Oct. Worcestershire headed by GM Arkell had a solid win against local rivals Warwickshire to get a good start to the season.

29 Oct. Worcestershire just edged a result playing a higher graded team away at Leicestershire. Both teams’ GMs looked for richer pickings in a weekend event.

3 Dec. After a storming start, Worcs narrowly beat Lincolnshire.

18 Feb. Worcestershire, already assured of a place in the national stages were defeated away by Nottinghamshire. Lincolnshire beat Leicestershire to share the Midlands team championship with Worcestershire, but Worcs were the MCCU’s first nomination for the national stages.

A very close match, Worcestershire stormed into a 7 - 1 lead but a large majority of the games still in play looked to be in Lincolnshire’s favour. They did pull it back and with 3 to finish Worcs still needed half a point to win the match. Worcester player Peter Kitson successfully defended a bishop versus knight and pawn ending to secure a draw and the match for Worcestershire.

On paper the teams were matched, but the flow of play saw Suffolk take an early lead and they did not look back. After two and a half hours’ play, Suffolk were 3 points up with quick wins on boards 8, 11 and 16. After a further half hour’s play, Worcestershire had their first and only win from John Edge which Suffolk countered with a win on board 14 and four draws. Suffolk secured their victory just after half past five with a win on board 2. Arkell was unable to make headway with a miniscule advantage in a minor piece ending against Merry in the last-but-one game to finish. In the last game, Nigel Towers had to concede a draw from unstoppable queen checks in a position where he had an extra bishop.
